LACK OF VITAMIN C CAN INCREASE RISK OF STROKE

In a small study , French researchers have found that people who are deficient in vitamin C may be at greater risk for bleeding in the brain , or also called a hemorrhagic stroke . Hemorrhagic stroke affects 15 percent of all types of stroke , but usually this type of stroke is more deadly than ischemic stroke , a stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked .

" This study shows that low levels of vitamin C in the body can increase the risk of bleeding in the brain of a sudden , " said the lead researcher , Dr. Stephane Vannier of Pontchailloun University Hospital in Rennes .The relationship between vitamin C deficiency and strokeThis association may be related to the role of vitamin C that can lower blood pressure and maintain healthy blood vessels , Vannier said . Although revealing the relationship between vitamin C levels and risk of hemorrhagic stroke , but this study did not demonstrate a causal connection directly . Vitamin C is found in fruits and vegetables , such as citrus fruits , papaya , strawberries , peppers and broccoli .

Vannier said that these findings provide a rationale for testing the efficacy of vitamin C supplementation in preventing cerebral hemorrhage . However, he does not recommend taking supplements of vitamin C at this time . The best way to get vitamin C is through food , Vannier said . " We really do not recommend the use of vitamin C supplements when you do not lack these nutrients , " he said .

Dr. Ken Uchino , a stroke specialist at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio , said that other studies are needed to confirm the possible relationship between vitamin C levels and cerebral hemorrhage . Vitamin C deficiency can also cause bleeding gums , Uchino said . " Vitamin C does have a relationship with the integrity of the network , " he said . " One could speculate that it may have something to do with a brain hemorrhage . " Vitamin C deficiency may simply indicate an unhealthy lifestyle as a whole , which can increase the risk of stroke , Uchino said .

In this study , the research team analyzed 65 people who had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke and 65 healthy people . Blood samples revealed that 41 percent of the participants had normal levels of vitamin C , 45 percent run levels of vitamin C , and 14 percent lack of vitamin C.

On average , those who had a stroke had run out of levels of vitamin C , while vitamin C levels normally found in healthy participants . Endless levels of vitamin C were associated with longer hospitalization , but not associated with a high risk of death , the researchers found .

" Vitamin C levels were significantly lower in people who had brain hemorrhage , compared to healthy people , but we do not calculate the risk probability , " Vannier said . High blood pressure , drinking alcohol and being overweight is another risk factor for brain hemorrhage , he said .

This study confirms that everyone should keep their nutritional intake , said Dr. Louis Morledge , an internist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City . " The food menu they should be more on fruits and vegetables , and they should consider taking a multivitamin , " he said .
